Geocache Description:

Houston Audubon is a non-profit conservation and education organization. It’s mission is to advance the conservation of birds and positively impact their supporting environments. It’s vision is the creation of a healthier natural environment and more beautiful place to live by leading and nurturing a community that values birds.

High Island is a heavily forested habitat island. Surrounded by coastal prairie, salt and freshwater marshes, it sits 30 feet above the surrounding areas on an elevated geologic structure called a salt dome. This elevation allowed for the colonization of woodland plants. Every year from March to May thousands of migrating birds use this area to rest and refuel after a 600+ mile journey from the Yucatan Peninsula across the Gulf of Mexico. Please visit (visit link)  for more information about sanctuaries in High Island.

If you're here from March to June please check out the rookery island in Claybottom Pond. Every year hundreds of breeding colonial waterbirds use this island as a refuge for nesting and rearing chicks. Roseate Spoonbills, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets and Neotropical Cormorants are among the majority of species you can find nesting on the island.

From March to May you can park in the lot off of Old Mexico Rd. At other times of the year please park at the end of Winnie St. Day passes for these sanctuaries cost 7 dollars, payable at the red honor boxes at the entrances. Day pass is good for ALL audubon sanctuaries in High Island. Children and students are FREE. All proceeds go toward furthering Houston Audubon's conservation efforts.

These sanctuaries are home to biting and stinging insects, venomous snakes and poison ivy. Use area at your own risk and be mindful of reaching into dark holes or under logs. Use a stick if you're unsure. BRING BUG SPRAY (you'll thank me later)!

This is the first in a series of caches that will be placed in Houston Audubon sanctuaries in High Island. Each will contain educational snip-its on a different bird species that uses these sanctuaries. This particular cache will focus on the Scarlet Tanager. GOOD LUCK!!
