Geocache Description:

The Darrtown Bicentennial Series(DBS) of caches was created to provide geocachers with knowledge and a look at some of the historic sites and structures in 200 year old Darrtown, Ohio. The Darrtown Bicentennial Series consists of nine caches which were published on July 5th, 2014 as the featured activity of the CCLP's Independence of Caching event.

This cache is a letterbox hybrid, and as such, it contains a beautiful stamp and ink pad which should remain in the cache and not be taken as swag. Letterboxers will ink the stamp in their books to signify a find, and ink their own personal stamp in the cache log as well. The stampily adorned books become a beautiful form of documentation of all the letterboxer's 'finding' adventures. The CCLP has never met one, but we are pretty sure they are real. If you are not a letterboxer, please just sign the log in the traditional manner.

The Darrtown Telephone Company was founded in 1900, and reached its' zenith under the ownership of L.A. Miller, who owned and operated the business from 1928 to 1941 with his son Ernest. The significant and fascinating thing to realize about this company is that it was literally a 'Mom and Pop' telephone company. The Millers first drummed up business, convincing people that such a newfangled thing was desirable. Next they dug post holes, erected poles and strung the line to their nearly 100 subscribers. The switchboard operated out of their house and was often operated by Mrs. Miller, who quickly became the most informed woman in Darrtown! They billed their customers 1$ a month and routinely took corn, hogs, and produce for payment. In 1941, Mr. Miller sold the Darrtown Telephone Company to a larger operation in nearby Oxford. The conductor of my tour of the historic sites of Darrtown, delightedly recalled stories of the old switchboard and how telephone calls worked in this much simpler time. The cache itself resides a short distance south of town on the banks of Darrtown's preeminent waterway, the Four Mile Creek. As you drive out and back to the cache site be sure to check out the former Miller residence/Darrtown Telephone Company. It occupies the southeast corner of the 177 and South street intersection, right where the road bends its way out of town.
