Loddon Vale SS 2398

1881 - 1928

Loddon Vale is a farming district about 30km south of Kerang on the Loddon Valley Highway.

Land of 2 acres in the SE corner of William Plaice's property was gazetted as a school reserve in April 1881.

The Rev. E Taylor advised the Dept of Education that a Methodist Chapel had been erected immediately opposite the selected site and could be leased for school purposes for 5s weekly.

SS2398 Loddon Vale opened on July 4th 1881 with Hannah Bell as Head Teacher and 30 pupils, but by 1884 pupil numbers had fallen to 19, and over the next few years the school struggled to stay open.

The school temporarily closed in 1894, but reopened in July 1898 with Jane Heath as Head Teacher, but in 1904 again became part-time with Canary Island 2546, and later with Yarrawalla 1710, but closed in June 1915.

A new school was built on another site costing nearly 600 pounds and was first occupied in April 1928, the name of the school was changed to Loddon in 1929, pupil numbers that had been 30 in 1930 had fallen to such an extent that the school closed in January 1945.

The building was removed to replace the one at Gonn Crossing which had been destroyed by fire.
