Geocache Description:

A cache hidden opposite the beautiful church.

You will walk down from cache number two and into the village. You will see a row of cottages and some more substantial properties. The church of St. Arvan is an ancient building of stone, erected at various periods, and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower containing one bell, dated 1751. The priest's door on the south side of the chancel is an interesting example of Early Norman work, and there is a window on the same side dating from a century later.

The parish church is dedicated to St Arvan, who, according to tradition, supported himself through fishing in the River Wye for salmon, but drowned when his coracle capsized. There was apparently within the church for many years a stone carving showing a coracle and a salmon. A refurbishment and partial restoration took place in the 1980s when the carved ceiling of the chancel and sanctuary were finally decorated as they had originally been intended when the roof was renewed in the Victorian period.

Last year, with funding from the Bringing Your Village Alive grant the church tower pyramid was re-roofed using the skills of stone roofing. Such a roof is a valuable substrate for lichens and moss, and the process of re-roofing was sympathetic to bats and birds. Please have a good look at the church as it is splendid.

The cache is micro hidden on the footpath side of the church yard. You will need to bring a pencil/pen. Please note you do not need to enter the churchyard to find the cache.

Permission to hide the cache was kindly given by Father Michael. Well done to Moocowsdad for being the first to find.
