2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the University of Guelph. As part of the anniversary celebrations the University unveiled it's new Gryphon statue on June 21, 2014. The $300,000 facelift to the University's entrance at the corner of Stone Rd and Gordon Street, which features a new sign, garden and statue, was funded entirely by donations.
'Gryph' is the mascot of all U. of G. sports teams and is the representation of the mythological Gryphon, a creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle's talons as its front feet. Note that this Gryphon is perched atop a book, representing the mythological belief that the Gryphon is the keeper of knowledge.
The cache has been placed as close to the statue as I was able to find a good hiding spot. After locating the cache, it is worth the short walk to visit the Gryphon. Parking during the weekday might be difficult, as most parking is either reserved or metered. Pay close attention to the parking signs and regulations as tickets will be issued quickly during weekdays. Evening, weekend and holiday parking should be much easier.
