Geocache Description:

The Dawes House, North West corner of the house. 1301 H Street, Lincoln Nebraska. Built in 1885.

The home of Charles Gates Dawes. Built as a duplex in 1885 for Henry E. Noble, the house was sold in 1891 to Charles Dawes and his wife. Dawes only lived in the house for three years. He moved to Chicago in 1898, continuing the career in finance, diplomacy, and public service he begun in Lincoln and was the purchasing agent for the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Dawes was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for the "Dawes Plan" which allowed Germany to pay off its World War I reparations through means of international loans and mortgages on German industries and railways.

Charles Dawes was a close friend of William Jennings and Charles Bryan, having moved to Lincoln the same year as William Jennings Bryan. He was a member of the intellectual and political discussion group, the "Round Table Club," founded by W.J.Bryan and hosted several of it's meetings in this house. In 1924, he and Charles Bryan were each nominated as Vice Presidential candidates, Dawes as a Republican with Calvin Coolidge and Bryan as a Democrat with John W. Davis. The Republicans won the election.

The name of the restaurant now operating in the house, Billy's, was a nickname sometimes given to William Jennings Bryan by his friends. The restaurant contains an extensive collection of Bryan memorabilia.

You will be looking for a black nano. I had a little difficulty getting good coordinates so this is a very rough average. To make it easy, the cache is at the corner brick post on the iron fence. The area is often very busy so please use stealth!
