Once considered to be the tallest structure of it's type (guyed tubular steel mast) standing at 387.5 metres high the mast at Belmont transmitting station was shortened in April 2010 and now stands at a modest 351.65 metres. This makes it the second highest in the U.K. and the 14th tallest structure in the E.U.
The mast can be seen from miles around and I often look out for it while I'm out caching. Many many years ago I lived on the north bank of the Humber and one night driving to Hull I could see three red lights vertically in a line above the horizon and wasn't able to make out where they were. It wasn't until I moved to Lincolnshire over 20 years later and read about the Belmont station that I realised what the red lights had being in the night sky on that journey to Hull. It is nice when you can answer those little puzzles from way back.
The cache is a little closer to the ground but still not at ground level.
Congratulations to CT56OWL for the FTF.
