Geocache Description:

The 390m long cable-stayed bridge that links Dutton Park and the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland (UQ) was opened on the 17th December 2006, and is Australia’s first bridge designed for exclusive used by pedestrians, cyclists and public buses. While being constructed the bridge was known as the “Green Bridge”, a name still in unofficial use, due to the design’s focus on sustainable transport. During construction of the bridge an early-century landfill was discovered and an archaeological dig was undertaken by UQ’s Archaeology Department to retrieve and catalogue the items unearthed, including bottles and ceramics dating to the early 1900s. The dig provided insight into life in Brisbane at the turn of the 20th century.

The official name of the bridge is the “Eleanor Schonell Bridge” named in honour of Florence Eleanor Schonell, whose work with cerebral palsy children is internationally recognised. Her work also included the education of children with intellectual disabilities and testing for dyslexia. You can read more about Eleanor Schonell here.

The opening of the bridge signalled the end of the popular cross-river ferry service between Dutton Park and St Lucia, which had been running since 1967. The old Dutton Park ferry terminal can be seen from the bridge, adjacent to which is a carpark. Parking during semester can be scarce on both the St Lucia and Dutton Park side of the bridge, however weekends should be much better.

Although the bridge is a major commuter thoroughfare, efforts have been made to encourage pedestrians to stop and take in the scenery. The south side of the bridge is cyclist only and the north side of the bridge is for pedestrians, there is no need to go to the cycling lanes to find the cache.

The cache is a small, watertight container with enough room for some small swapables and trackables. This is a high muggle zone, please be certain to retrieve and replace without being spotted.

There's a small "blending in with muggles" button as a FTF prize and some mini-erasers and a dinosaur to get swaps started. A friendship tag trackable has also been added to the cache, its goal is to go to Scotland. smiley
