You might ask why place a cache near an ugly quarry. Well just about every paved road you travel on in the surrounding 50km radius is made from stone mined from this quarry. You might also ask, so what is important about rock? Well the quality of the road is largly dependant upon the quality of the rock forming what are called the base courses of the road. The thin surface you see is really just a seal to protect the layered base courses which do all the hard work of supporting your vehicle. So for people such as Georgie and Mrs Penguin, quarries, roads and crushed rock are beautiful to behold, thus proving the addage - beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This quarry and the roads are also the reason the CO's have to travel in the area and why we have placed caches nearby. So, even if you disagree about the beauty of a quarry, at least it has resulted in bringing you to this cache and hopefully others in the very beautiful surrounding Karroo.
