Geocache Description:

Ole Muddy Rd is an easy, “park and grab” cache with plenty of room to pull off to get out and stretch your legs on a paved side road. The cache is a small container with room for swag and travel bugs. Please place it back as you found it for the next person to find. As with all rural Texas Panhandle caches, be careful – watch out for snakes, plants with thorns, and such.

There is a little history to this area…

On Dec 15, 1903 a man’s body was found not far from this location. While traveling from Amarillo to his claim in New Mexico, he was overtaken by a winter storm and abandoned his wagon and team and lost his way in the blinding snow. After 18 days of searching, his friends found him where he fell.

Uncle Jack Leonard was no ordinary man. Forty years earlier, he served as a government scout and was with General Custer during the raid against Chief Black Kettle. Jack was a very successful businessman. $400 in cash, gold coins, and other valuables was found with him at the time of his death.

After his body was found, Jack was taken to Amarillo. Later he was given an “escort of honor” to the nearby town of Tascosa (now Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch) and laid to rest in the Casimiro Romero Cemetery. Uncle Jack Leonard now resides with 12 others in this small unknown cemetery. His marker is inscribed “One of Custer's Gallant Scouts".
