Author, naturalist, ornithologist, artist. He is recognized as the inventor of the modern field guide, having edited or written many of the volumes in the Peterson Field Guide Series, with topics encompassing rocks and minerals to beetles and reptiles. However, he is best known as a consummate birder, and the culmination of his artistic and bird identification skills was the publication of his first book‚ A Field Guide to the Birds‚ in 1934. It is still in print today. After finding the cache, visit the nearby graves of Roger Tory Peterson (N 41 18.707, W 072 19.366) and his wife. They are easy to spot; each stone includes a built-in bird bath.
