In 1850 Mr Horniman the tea merchant, bought land next to Park Hill known as The Warren and in 1853 he build a house on the site. Mr John Horniman was credited with changing the lot for the working classes, he gave them a fair deal in the tea trade.
Horniman lived at Coombe Cliff, as his home and gardens were known, for 40 years. Horniman poured his fortune into religious education, hospitals, handicrafts and helping the diseased, sick and troubled. He travelled worldwide and collected items of interest and natural history items. Many of these can today be seen at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, which is one of several buildings that he and his family left to the public. This museum also has a reconstruction of the conservatory that was originally at his house, where he kept plants gathered on his travels.
Your first task is to visit Mr Hornimans old house. The house has another use nowadays. How many words are on the main blue sign? = A. Also keep an eye out for Hornimans blue plaque on the building wall. Please only visit at the given co-ordinates (N51 22.055 W0 5.510)
Next walk to the Walled Garden which once belonged to the House (N 51° 22.093 W 000° 05.533). Today it contains an interesting collection of herbs and medicinal plants. The co-ordinates will take you to an information board. Nowadays the garden commemorates a local artist. She was born in 189B and died in 197C.
