Geocache Description:

Nybyen is the youngest part of Longyearbyen settlement. It was founded after World War II in 1946 when it again was possibly for Norway to begin mining again.

You will find Nybyen in the upper part of Longyear valley. Just follow the district heating pipes south and it's impossible to miss the 12 barracks.

The barracks was built in 1946 to accommodate all the miners that worked in the newly opened Mine 2B. In each barrack there was 36 rooms, and in every room 2 miners lived. Apparently this was an huge improvement compared to the earlier livings when 4 people lived in each room.
There was also bathing facilities, a laundry and an 24/4 mess hall in Nybyen. So the life here must have been luxurious.

Nowadays you will find 2 guest houses and an art gallery here in Nybyen.

Only one barrack is abandoned today, and that because the foundation has started to sink down into the ground.
