Balancing Rock - WOW! Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

lat&long junkie: This geocache has gone missing. The ammo can was tethered. There is no evidence of the box or the wire, so I can only imagine someone has taken it.

Geocache Description:

SAFETY FIRST:

  • DO NOT come here if it’s wet or dark.
  • Take care near cliff edges and particularly at the balancing rock GZ.
  • Activate tracking on your GPSr. This is not quite trackless wilderness, but if you become disorientated, it will be handy to have a line on the map page to head to.
  • No climbing equipment is required to reach any of these caches.
  • You have to leave what passes for a track to climb up the ridge to the geocaches, but it’s not a difficult or dangerous climb.

ONCE AGAIN
There is a lot of dry lichen on these rocks. It will be treacherous when wet!

This is one of four geocaches in this area entitled "Balancing Rock".
To find this geocache, you must first find either of the nearby traditional geocaches named Balancing Rock – afternoon delight or Balancing Rock – N.U.F.A.S. Co-ordinates in those geocaches will direct you to Balancing Rock – down there which will direct you to this one.

So, here you are. It’s quite an impressive piece of natural sculpture, isn’t it? Considering the journey to get here, I wonder how many people have actually seen it. Score a big point for geocachers and the game that takes you to places you wouldn't have visited otherwise..

To reach the cache, you will have to do a bit of rock hopping. NO climbing gear is needed. While looking for just the right spot, I went up and down and around for quite a while before getting to where I wanted to be and finding what I wanted to find.

The cache is tethered and tucked away where it is safe, but you may not feel safe accessing it. You’ll need a head for heights and the ability to not think about what is behind you. In this case, there is absolutely nothing behind you and that’s the unnerving part. The tether is long enough that you can sit safely and open the box after retrieving it.

This is a double act – 2 balancing rocks for the price of one.

I first came here alone, so didn’t want to do anything too stupid or painful. On my second visit, Mrs Lat&Long (the voice of reason) came too, so I wasn’t allowed to do anything too stupid or painful. Therefore, I still wonder if a skilled climber could get on top of the rock. I’m not, but if you are … well, a photo would earn you some impressive bragging rights.

There is not a lot holding up these rocks. Can you see Western Australia?

While you're sitting there with the geocache, have a look to the west at 302° magnetic (313° true). You'll see White Rock peeking out of the tree line about 2.2kms away. Did you find that one on the way in or perhaps on the way back?

Once you’ve signed the log and taken some photos (please do so), it’s possible to bush-bash a short-cut back to your in-bound track from here. It will save you a few hundred metres backtracking to where you initially/probably climbed up. You can’t see this rock formation from the track and the track is just a footpad through the grass. This is where your GPS’s tracking function will come in handy.
