Geocache Description:

This cache is part of my 'Booth Loop' series, almost half of which runs along the Pennine Way.

This small series of caches takes you on a loop of about 3.5 miles between Grindsbrook Booth (Edale itself), Upper Booth and Barber Booth. Parking is available in the village, and there are waypoints showing this on the first cache in the series. Most of the cache containers are either small clip-boxes or micro tube style containers. None of them have pens in, so you will need to bring your own.

None of the caches are in dry stone walls, so please do not look in any.

While you're walking around the loop, don't forget to look around you. This series is set in a beautiful valley, and the views alone are well worth the walk. It would be great to see photos on the logs! If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, there are a couple of my 'Oh Noe' mini-series set very close to the route of this series.

History

In 1894 the railway arrived in the Edale valley, driven through the 2-mile long Cowburn tunnel to the west. Borings for the tunnel were started from both ends, with both sloping slightly upwards - the summit of the line is inside the tunnel, about a quarter of the way from the eastern end. Despite this, when the two headings met, they were only an inch out of line with each other.

The railway line linked Manchester to Sheffield and rapid travel from Edale to either of these cities suddenly became a possibility. Consequently, most of the houses in Edale were built shortly afterwards, because for the first time, professional people were able to live in the countryside and commute to work in the city.

The Cache

This cache is hidden just through the first gate on your right as you come over the bridge.

Please replace the cache securely, so that it doesn't fall out. You'll need your own pen, as there isn't one in the cache, and you do need to sign the log to claim a find.
