TRAVEL TIPS: We recommend you to start from "La Serra" and walk in CAI's trail. We thought this cache with "Portresone villaggio abbandonato" (GC58B2K), to join a wonderful walk throught the coast and amazing places. We didn't want to make a Multi-C beacause the 2 caches are different but they have a common background story.
Barbazzano, antico borgo medioevale situato nel versante ligure in provincia di La Spezia, era un villaggio agricolo-pastorale. Tra faggi e cipressi, e qualche campo coltivato, ci si lascia alle spalle qualche nuova casa e un tipico muretto a secco, a 115m sul livello del mare l’antichissimo borgo di Barbazzano, già menzionato nel 981 d.C. in un diploma di Ottone II, divenne comune sotto la protezione di Pisa. Dall’anno 1152 il borgo fortificato compare in alcuni documenti insieme al castello di Ameglia con il quale condivise le sorti e la storia, dato che Barbazzano presidiava l’omonimo distretto nella curia di Ameglia e da li passava l’antica via che metteva in comunicazione l’attuale litorale lericino con la vallata del Magra ma soprattutto con il castrum di Ameglia, sede del vescovo. Il borgo era un importante centro marinaro, la pesca e il commercio erano importanti per le attività che si affacciavano sul Golfo. Oltre a ciò, si dice che Barbazzano fosse un covo di pirati, le cui azioni erano temute nella zona. La leggenda vuole che Barbazzano venne distrutto da un’invasione saracena nel XV secolo, ma non fu così: nel XIV secolo, la peste provocò l’abbandono del borgo e la nascita di Tellaro e Fiascherino. La leggenda del Grifo, racconta inoltre, che il Borgo di Barbazzano, cinto d’assedio da soldataglie guidate da un guerriero ritenuto invincibile, fu miracolosamente soccorso da un grifo, che si avventò sul fortissimo condottiero, spappolandogli un occhio a colpi di becco. Presi dal panico, gli assalitori si ritirarono in gran scompiglio, e la rocca fu salva. Storia o leggenda che sia, mise in tutto il Lericino profonde radici. Ancor’oggi si racconta che sopra una delle porte d’accesso al borgo fortificato di Barbazzano, fu murato un grifo scolpito nell’arenaria, in segno di riconoscenza per l’insperata vittoria che il rapace aveva propiziato. ---\\ENGLISH//--- Barbazzano was a medieval village located in the Gulf of La Spezia. The village, mentioned as long ago as 981 in a Otho II's document, beacame a municipal district under the protection of Pisa. Since 1152 the village appears in some documents with Ameglia's manor. Barbazzano controlled the district of Ameglia's curia; here passed the old way from Lerici to Valley of river Magra but most of all to the castrum of Ameglia, Apostolic See. The village was an important center of maritime, fishing and trade were important for tasks that faced the Gulf. In addition, it is said that Barbazzano was a haunt of pirates, whose shares were feared in the area. Legend has it that Barbazzano was destroyed by the Saracen invasion in the fifteenth century, but it was not so: in the fourteenth century, the plague caused the abandonment of the village and the birth of Tellaro and Fiascherino. The legend of the Griffin says also that the Village of Barbazzano, besieged by mercenaries led by a warrior considered invincible, was miraculously rescued by a griffin, who pounced on the strong leader, who became blind in one eye with shots beak. In panic, the attackers retreated in great disarray, and the fortress was saved. History or legend that is, put in all the deep roots of Lerici. Even today it is said that on one of the gateways to the fortified village of Barbazzano, was walled up a griffin carved in the sandstone, as a sign of gratitude for the unexpected victory that had brought him the bird of prey.
