Geocache Description:

This cache was created to highlight St. Bridget Chapel in Berryville, which became the first Catholic Church in Clarke County, Virginia on May 25, 2002.

St. Bridget (Brigid in Gaelic) was born in 451 or 452 at Faughart, near Dundalk, County Louth and died February 1, 525, at Kildare in Ireland.  She is the most well-known female leader of the early Celtic Christian Church. She is one of Ireland’s patron saints along with Saints Patrick and Columba. Irish hagiography makes her an early Irish Christian nun, abbess, and founder of several monasteries of Christian nuns, including that monastery of ‘Kildare’ Ireland, which was considered legendary and was highly revered.

St. Bridget is also famous for a special cross named after her. It is a Christian symbol possibly deriving from the pagan sunwheel, and is usually made from rushes or, less often, straw. It comprises a woven square in the centre and four radials tied at the ends. Bridget’s crosses are traditionally made on February 1st, which in the Irish language is called Lá Fhéile Bhríde (St Bridget’s feast day), the day of her liturgical celebration. Many rituals are associated with the making of the crosses. It was traditionally believed that a Bridget’s Cross protects the house from fire and evil. It is hung in many Irish and Irish-American kitchens for this purpose.

You are looking for a small homemade container containing only a log, so bring your own pen. Container could hold VERY small trade items or trackables. Nearby parking is not a problem except when mass is being celebrated at 9 am on Sundays, or 12:05 on weekdays. Cache has been placed with property owner permission, but please be respectful of the grounds when caching. You DO NOT need to enter any building to find the cache.
