Suomessa on viisi yleistä lepakkolajia, kaikki pieniä hyönteissyöjiä. Maailmassa on noin 1200 eri lajia lepakoita, joista vain kolme on verta syöviä vampyyreja. Vampyyrien syljessä on veren hyytymistä hidastavia aineita eli antikoagulantteja. Nykyään vampyyrilepakoiden antikoagulantteja on jalostettu lääkkeeksi, jota voidaan käyttää esimerkiksi veritulppien hoidossa ihmisillä!

There are five common bat species in Finland, all of them tiny insect eaters. There are about 1200 species of bats in the world, and only three of them are blood-eating vampires. Vampire bats secrete anticoagulants which slow down the clotting of blood. Today, the anticoagulants of bats have been developed into medicines that are used, for example, for treating thrombosis!
