Hatupatu was a legendary member of the Arawa tribe of Rotorua. Once, when he was returning to his parent's house after exploring the forested areas around Atiamuri and Mokai, he found he was being pursued by Karungaituku, a mysterious bird-woman. While trying to outrun her, he came upon a huge rock. Repeating a karakia he ordered it to open for him. "Te kohatu nei- e matiti matata". The rock immediately split open and Hatupatu leapt inside it to hide until Karungaituku had gone.
The Rock Of Refuge is a place of cultural significance for our Maori folk, and should be respected. It is common practice for people who visit The Rock Of Refuge to leave a token gift, as you will see people have done so before you. Token gifts could be similar to what we exchange in our caches so there should be no problem to leave something behind.
The cache is a pill container with log and pencil.
State Highway One is very close, becareful with children, there is no need to go onto the road, also could be a high muggle area due to being beside main road, so some stealth may be required
Whoever is the First To Find please take my dog Cody for a walk, you will understand once you have found the cache.
****FTF Honours: squirrel nutcase****, thanks for setting Cody on his final journey :)
