Geocache Description:

Wuraga (Wurarga) was once a thriving railway siding.

The railway line arrived in 1896 and was supported by buildings including a goods shed, railway platform, stockyards and three stone railway ganger’s huts. Other facilities in the town included a hotel, post office, police and courts and a terminus for Gascard’s Daily Coach Service to Yalgoo and towns further east. By 1897 there was a resident station master and a stone railway station and platform to service the area. The last station master left in 1923.

The hotel was first licensed in 1896 and finally de-licensed in 1969. The store which was possibly part of the hotel remained open until the realignment of the road away from the siding in the 1970’s.

The Murchison district flourished in the early twentieth century with railway expansion due to gold mining in the area. A railway reservoir was built in 1932 about two kilometres from Wuraga in a normally dry creek bed. The reservoir originally had a roof over the top but now is open.

This is a great spot to wander around and camping is allowed. The cache is hidden amongst the trees close to the dam but take the time to drive further south where you will see the remains of the buildings.
