Geocache Description:

Headland Park Trails - Cache #1

Welcome to the second cache of the Headland Park Trails cache series!

This cache is near the small park on a new trail that goes from the Tea Rooms at Gunners Barracks to Rawson Park.

Headland Park has captivating views of Sydney harbour and the city. It is a wonderful area with new walks and trails being added every few years. The walks have scenic views looking out into Sydney Harbour and over Rose Bay. There are many activities in and around Headland Park and there are cafes and restaurants on the Mosman Strip (Military Rd).

Although some in the community view the tanks as unattractive, rehabilitation will reduce their visual impact while maintaining their heritage value. They were built just prior to the outbreak of WW II and in the panic that followed the bombing of Pearl Harbour it was decided that they should be camouflaged to protect them from aerial attack. Consequently, a false roof structure supported on massive timber posts was constructed over them. This is described in Register of the National Estate as “the first large-scale example of camouflage in Australia”. More importantly it is most probably the only surviving example in Sydney. Each tank has a capacity of approximately 5 megalitres and has great potential for the storage of water – either collected or recycled on site, for fire fighting and the irrigation of the neighbouring ovals and parkland.
The Harbour Trust is investigating the:
• Potential to use the tanks for water storage, for irrigation and for fire fighting.
• Potential to use the tanks as walled gardens interpreting successive changes in the natural environment of the headland.
• Construction of a rooftop lookout that is linked to the pathway network.

The cache is a large green cylindrical container that is placed somewhere near the the small park area.

There is plenty of room for swaps & drops.

After finding the cache, please make sure it is well tucked away in the exact same spot that you found it in.
