Clarence Campbell, one of the most colorful presidents of the NHL was born on July 9th 1905 in Fleming Saskatchewan. Although not a player, he was one of the best referees of the 1930's. After serving in WWII, he returned to the NHL to assist the league president and then became president himself. He was most famous for the time in 1955 when he suspended The Rocket Richard just before the playoffs. This sparked the riots in Montreal, and most notably the speach of the Rocket on the radio calling for the people of Montreal to stop rioting. Clarence also oversaw the first 2 expansions of the NHL, first in 1968 and then again in 1975. He stepped down in 1977.
Clarence Campbell was inducted to the HHOF as a builder in 1966 and he died on June 24th, 1984.
