Geocache Description:

A large traffic island, once home to the Grosvenor Hotel and the George Railway Hotel, now almost unbelievably derelict.  The main challenge on this cache will be stealth; it's fairly easy to locate and retrieve for this reason. If you are having GPS trouble or worried you might need to dig around read the hint. Please note there's no pen in the cache.

We wanted to place a cache to mark our 500th find (which will probably be within a week of placing) and near to where mr boa works.  He has benefited from many caches in the Bristol area that have amused us with puzzles and/or pointed out features we weren't aware of.  The other 3 boas have even cached in Bristol on occasion.  We hope this adds something to the mix....

The Island Site (its official name) has been derelict since the 4boas moved to the West Country many years ago.  It appears to be prime land, but there have been issues redeveloping it.  The consequence is that the view for people leaving Bristol Temple Meads station is less than delightful.  (This cache is now on the other side from Temple Meads, if you face it from GZ the Grosvenor Hotel is the building to the left and the George Railway Hotel is on the right.) Don't panic, new arrivals, there are much more pleasant things just a few minutes away!

We will not attempt to give the complex history of this site.  For a summary start at this story, and cachers with more local knowledge than us are invited to add further links in their logs.

Amusingly, despite the buildings being run-down, you can get a hint of what they once looked like from the current scaffold covering.  We hope something better and more permanent comes of this site soon - even if it means archiving this cache!

Please replace this cache as found, just hidden from passers. Only one side is magnetic. Many thanks.
