Geocache Description:

A small cache which brings you to the church in the centre of Hibaldstow

This cache is to replace Out of Place 3 which was located across the road at a position which is expected to be turned into a housing site very shortly. I have moved it here and re-named it so that you can admire our village church opposite.

This is one of only three churches in the country dedicated to St Hybald - the other two being the sister church in Scawby and Ashby-de-la-Launde. The church has the particular honour of having the bones of St Hybald himself buried under the chancel. The village name Hibaldstow means "burial-place of St Hybald" and dates back to at least 664AD, although there was a larger settlement at Gainsthorpe before that. It is thought that St Hybald, possibly a pupil of St Chad, set up a mission station or monastery in what became Hibaldstow, and was eventually buried there. Following his canonisation, a shrine was built near his grave to hold his relics, and became a place of pilgrimage. This continued until the English Reformation when the shrine was destroyed. Hybald's body remained undisturbed until it was rediscovered in 1864, when the, then, dilapidated church was rebuilt.

Despite the long history of Christian worship in Hibaldstow, the present church is a comparatively modern building, dating from 1866 (chancel) and 1875 (nave), and the tower was rebuilt in the 1960s. However, as well as being regularly used as a Church of England parish church, St Hybald's also occasionally plays host to pilgrimmages from other denominations to the relics of St Hybald.

In 2011, this church and St Hybald's, Scawby joined with the parish of St Mary's, Broughton to form a new group of parishes.

The cache container is a bison tube behind the power pole to the left (ground level). A pen will be needed to sign the log. Entry into the graveyard is NOT required.
