Cache located on the Liberty "Rails-to-Trails" on the right of way of the former New York, Ontario & Western Railway. This railroad was once a major hauler of (anthracite) coal from the line's coal mines near Scranton, Pa., to New York City. As you walk along the rail trail you will spot what appears to be coal on the path. And it is indeed coal: the frugal O&W used the unburnable slag (waste) coal from thier mines as ballast for the tracks.
Just west of the site of this cache will be found a weather-worn concrete box. This box once contained the batteries that supplied electrical current to the railroad's signalling system. Near the battery box, protruding from the ground, will be found the square concrete bases that once supported the signals whose function was to keep trains from running into one another on the busy railroad.
The O&W was abandoned on March 29, 1957. The rails in this area (Liberty) were removed and scrapped in June, 1958.
