Geocache Description:

Geocache hidden with Fairfax County geocaching camp. And permission from the Park Authority. Cache hidden along lake Acotink trail.

Dear Cachers, This cache has moved! and It gets a history now too!

Back in 2014 I was a novice geocacher and decided to take a Fairfax County geocache camp one summer. During the camp, I hid this very cache. The spot I had chosen was very easy for a young limber 14 year old kid. The area around the cache wasn't in as bad of a state either, it was a little steep but the ground was still solid for the most part but that's what gave the cache its name. When hidden on National Free Slurpee Day (7/11) in 2014 It seemed that jamming the cache in between the nook of the big tree at the top of the trail entrance above the drainage pool would be enough to keep it in place. After 2 months I began to realize that this cache was already taking a good beating, Cachers would find it down the hill from its spot, place it back where they felt it should have been hidden, then I would have to go back down to double-check. This cache seemed to get a fair share of bullies, as it would get found on the ground with its contents spilled all over.

7 months after the original hide I decided to try and stop the cache from being vandalized or lost during a fall. On 4/27/2015 my dad and I made some modifications to the plastic pencil box by screwing a bolt in the side and putting the cache on a metal chain that was screwed into the tree. This tactic became a favorite among cachers who found it (I mean how often do you see a plastic geocache chained to a tree?). The fix did prevent the caches from being lost permanently, but it still took a beating. Rather than being on the ground, the cache would be found hanging down the backside of the tree 9 times out of 10 with the lid popped off and it's contents still spilled. Thankfully to some amazing geocachers it always was fixed by the next person to find it. The cache remained in its original container for nearly 6 years and was very beaten up, logs rarely lasted more than a few weeks before getting waterlogged or spilled and lost. Not only did the cache get "run down" over these 6 years, the ground around the cache was not fairing much better.

So on 3/16/2020, I decided that it was time the cache got moved and replaced, as I was now 20 and struggling to access my own cache. The earth around the tree was eroding from runoff and people walking up and down to get the cache. For the safety of future finders, I decided the cache should not, and could not remain in its original spot. The cache now hides at the bottom of the entrance by the Trail. The hint will help you figure out the rest. BYOP.
