Robert Moses proposed to build what he would call “Sound Shore Parkway” which would have began in downtown Glen Cove then it would have gone through Lattingtown, Bayville, Centre Island, then cross over Cold Spring Harbor, cut through Lloyd Neck (right through this park!) Then it would cross Huntington harbor, continue through Eatons Neck, Asharoken, Fort Salonga and end up in Sunken Meadow Park. Robert Moses added this parkway to his “master plan” in 1965. Usually when he planned something, it was done his way or the highway... and this is one of the rare exceptions that a project of his did not happen. If he had his way, there may have been a 4 lane parkway where this cache is placed. It is hard to imagine a parkway going through all the extremely wealthy northern “necks” of Long Island but he wanted his Proposed “Caumsett parkway " to be a connecting point for Sunken Meadow Parkway and the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway and eventually a bridge across the Long Island Sound to the north. To understand his "plan", just look at any map and see how all his existing parkways end or connect to one of his state parks.... all with the exception, the Northern State parkway, where the wealthy landowners in Old Westbury influenced politicians and together, they finally stopped the "power broker"
I happen to like this this undeveloped 1400 acre park just the way it is.
Directions to cache: From Huntington Village, take W Neck Rd all the way north through Lloyd Harbor. Continue into Lloyd Neck (the road changes to Lloyd Neck Rd). Make a left into Caumsett Park and park in the small lot. Hopefully you have an Empire passport or else you will have to pay a fee in warm weather months. Once parked, head north on the paved bike path and look for the giant, lone tree in the field on your left.

Note: This is one of those "Cache is no big deal, but I have to own this location" hides.
