Discover the tragic tale behind the location of this woodland cave. It’s worth a visit and you could stop for a picnic too. It's a great spot to see Iceland's nature, there are lots of tracks and it’s a great place for birds.
The tale tells the story of the Stóri-Hellir cave, believed to be haunted by a ghost wearing a blue scarf. The story behind the the man with a blue scarf is that out of lost love, he hanged himself in the caves.
The cave was also used to store hay for sheep that grazed outside, and has been there for 700 thousand to 3.1 million years, formed in the inter-glacial time and and erosion from the sea, where it would have been underwater.
