Originally several Native American groups were involved with the Bethpage area prior to its settlement by Quakers. The Massapequa, Secatog and Matinecock all hunted and roamed the area and had some claim to it. In 1695, Thomas Powell, a devout Quaker, bought the land from Native Americans. He paid 140 sterling pounds.
Thomas Powell, Sr. explored more and more of his land. In time he found the area called "Rim of the Woods" and arranged to buy it from the Indians who lived there. This land is where most of modern day Bethpage is today. Powell divided up this land between his kids.
Powell called his land Bethpage (which means "house of figs") because there was a place in the Bible in between Jericho and Jerusalem named Bethphage. His land was situated between the settlement of Jericho and what had previously been referred to as Jerusalem (now Wantagh).
Directions to the cache : There are 2 ways to get to the cache
- Take Central Avenue in Bethpage and you are looking for Central Ave South which is between Rt 135 and the train trestle. On that street make your 1st left and go behind a factory and find a dirt trail that heads east towards Bethpage Parkway.
- If you have a 4WD and want to have fun, find the dirt trail right next to the train trestle on Central Ave and take it all the way to the multi-stages.
You will see a dirt mound that has to be crossed (on foot, not car). Then cross the old railroad tracks and look for stage 1.
