At St Kilda junction, there is a red gum tree thought to be 300-500 years old. It is believed to mark the site of Aboriginal ceremonies prior to European settlement in 1835. The tree is a symbol of the cultural heritage of the original Australians.
St Kilda Junction's famous corroboree tree was preserved because pioneer locals could recall scenes of stamping feet ''that haunted the soul for many years after''. Europeans described men with bodies streaked in red and white ochre, dancing ''like skeletons around the blazing fire, shouting and brandishing their long spears while the lubras chanted and played on drums made of wild skins of animals''.This is a unique cache, in a unique area, please take care and return it to its original position. And as always please ensure no muggles are aware of your presence. Be safe, you do not need to go near the road and neither do the geokids. Keep an eye on them. Enjoy the hunt.
