The cache is hidden at the start of the walkway to Birchville Dam. This part of Upper Hutt is a very special place to me and one of the few areas that keeps pulling me back to it. I like the peacefulness and tranquility of the place.
Birchville Dam is found on the Canon Creek Walkway on Clarke's Stream, a tributary on the west bank of the Hutt River. In 1914, the Upper Hutt Town Board purchased the land around the stream to provide a water supply reserve for Upper Hutt. The contract to build the dam was awarded to M G Templeton in April 1930. It was completed in early 1931. Water from the dam was fed into the original water supply pipeline via a 12 inch pipe. The remains of this pipe can still be seen in places along the walkway. The dam is a concrete arch structure that is 46 metres long. It is 15 metres high but appears lower than this due to the massive amounts of boulders that were placed at its base to protect against erosion. The dam almost always has water flowing over the top which makes it a great place for photos and for the kids. I wouldn't recommend walking on the boulders at the base of the dam as they are very slippery. The lake behind the dam is a truly beautiful place to visit. On calm and sunny days, the lake mirrors the surrounding native bush and sky. Ducks can often be found at the dam and they appreciate a snack of bread if you have any with you. To get to GZ, take the Akatarawa Road from Upper Hutt. At the Hutt River bridge turn left into Bridge Road. There is a car park up the hill at the end of the road. The dam is about a 30 minute walk upstream from GZ. It is well worth the walk up there. The cache is a small container big enough for some swaps and trackables. It is located in a high muggle area and stealth may be needed when retrieving and replacing. Please replace it exactly as found so that it doesn’t get muggled.
