Photo of an adult Altona Skipper or Yellow Sedge-skipper or Yellowish Skipper taken at Cherry Lake
Cherry Lake and nearby Truganina Swamp are habitat for the native sedge, Chaffy Saw Sedge (Gahnia filum). The sedgefields provide food and habitat for the endangered Altona Skipper butterfly, Hesperilla flavescens flavescens.
Friends of Altona Coastal Park, Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority, and Hobsons Bay City Council are collaborating to create corridor extensions for the endangered Altona Skipper Butterfly and other fauna. Chaffey Saw Sedge is integral to the Skipper's survival and suitable habitat conditions have been identified in the wetter areas of this site, where planting of this species will occur.
In the established beds, vegetation will replicate the pre-European sheoak woodland that was once widely abundant in the Altona area. The link between the current beds will aid as a wildlife corridor for species that may interact with the coastal fringes of the Altona Coastal Park.
The work has started and is ongoing. Come down and watch it grow.
