Across the square from this cache is the Second African Baptist Church where Gen. William T. Sherman announced Special Field Orders 15--or more commonly referred to as the "40 acres and a mule" order. Sherman's orders specifically allocated to slaves "the islands from Charleston, south to the St. John's River Florida." The federal government later overturned most of these gains.
