Geocache Description:

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THIS CACHE FROM INTERSTATE 80 - PLEASE SEE PARKING LOCATION COORDINATES.  This geocache is located within State Game Lands #38.  This is a 2-part multi-cache.  Since this is State Gamelands, be sure to wear bright ORANGE clothing during hunting season. Please be aware that this is a long hike and it will take you deep into the depths of SGL #38. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE CACHE DESCRIPTION PAGE BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS GEOCACHE.

You will be looking for a 2-part multi-cache and the coords listed on the cache page are for part 1.  Part 1 is a mega bison tube and contains the coordinates for the final cache.  Please enter the coordinates into your GPS and do not take the paper with the final coords with you.  Leave it in the cache for others to find.  The final cache is an ammo box.  Both should be easy enough to find within a reasonable amount of time.   Although the coordinates shows this cache is very close to Interstate 80, it is NOT accessible from the highway.  Please use the listed parking coordinates and take the hike down the trail to the cache locations.  The highway is nearby in horizontal distance, but it is higher in elevation, about 170 feet or more above your elevation.  The trail you will follow will take you underneath the highway to the northern part of the gamelands.

To start out, park at the top of Camelback Mountain in the State Game Lands area parking lot.  Walk from the parking lot towards the powerlines and head north down the hill.  Over the last year or so, new powerline poles have been installed, so now there are two separate power lines heading down the mountain.   There is some construction equipment at the top of the hill, but they will not affect your hike down the hill.  The trail down has been stoned and graded for the construction trucks, so it's a lot easier to walk on than the football-sized rocks that used to be here before.  The elevation at the parking area at the top of the hill is approximately 1960 feet.  The elevation at the geocache location is approximately 1300 feet.  There is an alternate parking area that is large enough for one car.  See the coordinates for alternate parking, which is located down the hill on the main road just above the state gamelands border.  This alternate parking area is a grassy pull-off in the woods on the right side of the road when driving up the hill. It is located approximately 20 feet above the stoned construction vehicle access road with the yellow gate.  Please do NOT park in this stoned access road and do NOT block the gate - it is used by the construction vehicles.  If you do park in this alternate location, follow the stoned access road to the main powerline trail.  You will save approximately 1/4 mile distance walking and 250 feet in elevation.

Follow the powerline trail down to the reference coordinates for the intersection trail.  This is where you will stay to the left onto the WB&E Old Railroad Grade Trail.  This trail is fairly level and will take you past some of my other caches:  WB&E Trail: Rhododendron Grove (GCTZJ8) and WB&E Trail: Forgotten Railbed (GCV258).  There are a few trail intersections along the way to the cache, so you might want to mark some waypoints so you don't take the wrong trail back.  This old railroad grade trail will bring you through a forest of Rhododendron bushes, which were in bloom when I placed this cache in July.  After the Rhododendron's, the trail will get a bit more muddier, with some large puddles along parts of the trail that are a breeding ground for mosquitos.  Continue on and you will  go down a small hill and see a large body of water ahead on your left.  You are in the vicinity of another of my caches: WB&E Trail: Abandoned Rails (GC2MH8X).  You will have to cross the small stream here, then follow the trail up the hill towards "Abandoned Rails".  There are a few steep hills to go up, then down here, so be careful.  Continue on the trail past "Abandoned Rails".  You will noticed that the trail zigzags through the forest, and you will get some occaisional glimpses of the noisy Interstate 80 off to your left.  Follow the trail through the ferns, then you will see a stream on your right as you go under a small canopy of Rhododendrons, then downhill with the stream below you on your right.

The first part of the multi-cache will be in this area.  Let me give you a hint, it will be on the left side of the trail, the side opposite from the stream.  Once you find part one, enter the coords for the final stage into your GPS and PLEASE do not remove the paper with the coordinates from the cache.  Up to now the trail has been relatively easy, just lots of hills and some mud.  Your travels to the final cache will take you through some little known areas in the far reaches of the gamelands.  You will get very wet as you will be wading across rocky streams, walking through streams, walking through dark tunnels under the highway, and climbing on some slippery rocks.  Please be careful and observe the high terrain levels from this point on.

The one-way distance for this hike is probably around 2-1/2 miles.  Suggest good hiking boots, a hiking stick, bug spray, water, and a flashlight.   You will be walking up and down lots of hills, some of them very steep.  You will be walking through mudpuddles, muddy trails, and water.  The amount of water in the streams vary according to the time of year and the amount of recent rains.  You may be walking through only an inch or two of water, but in some areas, the water will be over your knees, so be prepared to get very WET!   If you're observant, you might see plenty of wildlife including deer, a variety of birds, squirrels and other small animals, frogs and toads, red salamanders, possibly some snakes, and maybe even some spiders. Enjoy your hiking adventure down Camelback Mountain and through the gamelands.  This is a 4-star terrain cache, so if you feel uncomfortable with some of the terrain, please do not attempt it.  Have fun!
