Highlander 71: HUH! Nobody told me the area around the final is being developed!! All the trees, and I mean all of the trees, around the field have been cut down. I was happy to see the benches were still there so I could retrieve my container. Those magnetic key hiders are getting hard to find! [:)]

Geocache Description:

When the Royal Engineers were leaving BC to return to England in 1863, a land grant of 150 acres in Port Moody was offered to every sapper who wished to settle in Canada. Just four men took the grant, with Lance Corporal John Murray being the only one to actually live in the area. In 1886, he and his son, John Jr, surveyed the town that was named as the western terminus for the newly-completed Canadian Pacific Railway. Port Moody was destined to become sort of a "Toronto West".

Unfortunately for the land speculators who had quickly descended upon Port Moody, geography dealt them a cruel blow in 1887 when railway executives changed their minds and decided to relocate their terminus farther west to a new settlement called Gastown, or Vancouver as we know it today. It seems company officials were concerned that there was insufficient room for future expansion in Port Moody due to the close proximity of the Chines Escarpment’s steep slopes. This news meant lots that had been bought up for $15 then offered for sale at $1000 were sold off for $10, and sometimes less! This cache is dedicated to those who remained to help build the community.

While surveying the area with his father, John Murray Jr was given the task of choosing names for the streets they were laying out. His thoughts didn't stray far from home, and he ended up using the names of his family members and relatives, as well as a few more famous individuals. In order to determine the coordinates for the final, you must match up each street name in the list on the left below with the reason John Jr chose that name, listed below right.

Now comes the fun part. Put the information together to figure out where you need to go to find the cache. For example, if I say "Elgin" I am referring to the Governor General, so he would be #3.

Douglas Sarah St.George Jane Queens Douglas Hugh

Kyle St.John St.John Clarke Henry Clarke Kyle Mary

There you have it. As with all unknown cache types, the container is not at the posted coordinates, but it can be found within 2km. I hope you enjoy this one. John Jr's brother William Murray was my great-grandfather.
