Before the high speed rail station was built in Zhubei in 1999, most of the surrounding area was countryside populated largely by Hakka Chinese. When new roads and high rises started being built, some Hakkas joined together and decided to work to preserve a taste of the original Hakka culture in this area. The resulting XinWaWu Hakka Culture Preservation Zone is made up of a park that surrounds a complex of traditional buildings (even the remains of several mud brick houses) and other interesting venues for the preservation and cultivation of Hakka culture. For example, you can sign up for a class to learn how to play a certain kind of drum or you can see a Hakka movie. There are all sorts of small sidewalks and rock paths that wander intriguingly through passageways between the buildings with plentiful signs (in Chinese) explaining everything. On weekends, this place is often booming with Hakka cultural activities. For example, a Hakka music/food/art festival.
