Geocache Description:

Cache is located on top of Pilot Knob in Powell County right off of the Mountain Parkway. Has one of the most beautiful views in all of Kentucky.

NOTE: PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS TO PRESERVE THE AREA!!! DO NOT TAKE SHORTCUTS OR CUT ACCROSS SWTCHBACKS!!! This is a place we only discovered back in 2001, but it is now our favorite spot in central Kentucky. The view rivals those found anywhere else in central Kentucky including the many vistas in Red River Gorge. From the top of the Knob, one can clearly see Richmond, Lexington, and Winchester. It is thought Daniel Boone first surveyed the Bluegrass region of Kentucky from this very point.

Pilot Knob is located in Pilot Knob State Natural Preserve. To get to the parking area, take exit 16 and turn right onto Route 15. Go about 3 miles and turn right onto Brush Creek Road. Follow the road which dead ends into the Pilot Knob SNP parking area. The trail to the top of the knob is short, but it is very steep in a few sections with 600 feet of elevation gained. The trail should be no problem for those who hike frequently and the view more than makes up for the effort exerted. The cache is located within sight of the trail and is not located near a cliff so it is safe for children to help look for this one. Be sure to watch them everywhere else though because cliffs surround you on three sides in some places. Container is a 30 CAL olive green ammo box with the official GeoCaching insignia.
