Geocache Description:

At the listed coords for this cache you will find yourself standing at the open mouth of a large tunnel with a large pipe running out of it and going into the earth. A tunnel has been cut into the stone of the side of the gorge from which the pipe runs.

Built around 1870, this pipe once ran from the Lower Stony Creek Reservoir underneath the Anakie Gorge to a point below the basin, where from here water was distributed to Geelong via storage Basins at Lovely Banks and Montpellier as a way of a new and reliable water source at a time when fresh water much in need.

In 1999 however, this pipe and accompanying channels which were used to carry fresh warer from the Stony Creek Reservoir to the Anakie Basin was decommisioned and replaced by a pipe running along the Steiglitz-Durdidwarrah Road.

The cache

You will need some form of torch to retrieve this cache. Whilst there are no tight spaces you need to squeeze through, I would not recommend if you are clasutrophobic. I would not have placed this cache if in any way I thought it were unsafe- you can retrive this in under 2 minutes.

Please be careful, undertake at your own risk and note the terrain.
