Hawkeye (Night Cache) Mystery Cache
hzoi: Pretty sure I snagged all of the fire tacks, but if I missed any, consider them my gift to S.W.A.G.
I think my favorite part of snagging this one was finding out once I got home that the entire cache was full of spiders...AAAAAAHHHHH

A nice night cache along the blue bike trail on the south shore of Lake Lawtonka. Unlike the green and red trails to the west, the blue trail is available during hunting season -- recommend wearing orange between 1 October and 15 January regardless.
This is our first true night cache, hope you enjoy it! We've had a couple bags of fire tacks sitting around the house for years, we finally got inspired to use them. Please let us know what you think in your logs.
Get some good flashlights or headlamps, wait until it's dark, then park by Lawtonka Dam and cross over the dam. (Get the micro near the parking coordinates while you're at it, if you haven't already!)
The posted coordinates take you to the trailhead for the blue bike trail, which will take you along the southern shore of Lake Lawtonka. At the sign, use your light to look for an amber reflector and proceed down the trail. All reflectors should be at eye level or above. You will also be guided by a number of trail arrows. (See the photo for an example of both the trail arrows and the reflectors.)
Keep following the reflector trail until you reach the large tractor tire, around a third of a mile down the trail. Just after the tire, you should see a double set of reflectors. This is your cue to shift your lights away from the lake and the trail, and look for more reflectors.
You may have noticed that we're running out of trees at this point! Hope you got god practice locating reflectors along the trail; these last few are further apart and are going to be more difficult to spot. Look carefully and be patient. Just a couple more reflectors until the final, which is marked by a number of different colored reflectors.
NIGHT CACHING TIPS:
- Take a good, strong flashlight, as well as extra batteries, a phone, and your GPSr.
- Take a buddy for safety. While this cache is doable solo, an extra set of eyes might help!
- Hold your light around eye level for the best reflection and move the light around until you get a good reflection.
- If you lose track of a reflector, back up until you catch it again. (For this night cache, you should run into a reflector about every 200 feet.)
- Set your GPSr to save your track so you can follow your own trail back to the start.
- Be safe, watch your step, and HAVE FUN!
