Geocache Description:

CACHE IS NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES!!!

Baseball has always been my favorite sport. While I was only an average player, I am certainly an above average fan. I always enjoy attending games, watching baseball on TV, collecting baseball cards and even have been in a fantasy baseball league for many years.

Any baseball fan’s dream is to visit the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. This museum displays some of the great memorabilia from baseball history. You can see a uniform worn by Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson’s glove and Ted Williams’ bat.

Every year, the baseball writers of America cast ballots on whether eligible players should be inducted into the Hall. There have been tens of thousands of players who have suited up in the major leagues but after counting all the votes, only 306 of them have been elected to the Hall since 1936.

Baseball has a reputation of having the most restrictive election process. In order to be elected, a player must be listed on 75% of the ballots cast that given year. Despite such great players like Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and and Cal Ripken, there has never been a player that has been voted in unanimously. Tom Seaver received the highest percentage of votes in 1992 when he was named on 98.8 of the ballots.

The voting process has been criticized over the years and some people say that the process is too restrictive as many great players never make it. Supporters of the process argue that the Hall not for the greatest players but it is for the greatest of the greatest.

When a player is elected, a plaque is created. The plaque includes a picture of the player, the teams he played for and a short summary of their career. These plaques are displayed in the Plaque Gallery at the museum.

I had the honor of traveling to Cooperstown this summer for the induction ceremony. I loved walking around the museum and seeing all the memorabilia. I spent a considerable time in the Plaque Gallery reading about the legends of the game. I thought I would share a few of the players I read about.

I started on the North End of the Gallery:
I then proceeded to the West side:
