Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden at Statlu Falls. A very impressive and infamous waterfall on the Chehalis River below Statlu Lake. 4x4 is highly recommended to reach the trailhead but some folks have done it with 2wd.

This is no doubt one of the best waterfalls anywhere in the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley region. Sadly however, it is impossible to get a full view without literally killing yourself. The falls gained their infamy in the early 90s for claiming the lives of people who would wander too close to the edge of a gully near the top of the gorge attempting to get a better view. Following the deaths of 3 people at the falls, the BC coroner's service recommended that logging roads in the area be deactivated in order to make access to the falls more difficult, this lead to over 100 water bars being put in on the access road making for a much rougher drive. However in December 2007, a large landslide into Chehalis Lake took care of the full deactivation as it completely wiped out one section of Chehalis Lake FSR and prompted the closure of the large bridge at the north end of the lake. The current access trail which begins from an entirely different area was built in 2010. The whole area north of Chehalis Lake is now only accessible via the former Harrison West FSR, now technically known as Sts'Ailes FSR (that being the non-anglicised spelling of Chehalis of course). Though the road is still more commonly called by its former name.

Directions:

Take Harrison West/Sts'Ailes FSR to the 28th km and go left onto Chehalis-Mystery FSR. Drive to a fork in about 8 km and take the road to the right for a very short distance to a narrow logging road on the left. This is the beginning of the trail. If you have a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle AND don't mind a few nicks and scratches to the paint job, you can drive a few hundred feet further to the end of the road where there is a widened area for parking. Otherwise park at the side of the main road near the given coordinates. The first section of the trail follows an overgrown track to the edge of the woods where it then opens up and descends to a log footbridge over Eagle Creek. Be careful when crossing this narrow bridge as it can be slippery and a fall would hurt like hell if not kill you. Hold on to the wire "railing"! The trail continues through the woods for a short distance after the bridge eventually reaching an old overgrown FSR track. Go left and continue for just over 1 km to another log bridge over a small unnamed creek. Keep an eye out for the Statlu Lake trail on the right a short distance further. If you reach the old, decaying road bridge over the Chehalis River, you've gone too far.

The trail first climbs gradually along another old FSR track eventually changing to a regular hiking trail then climbing steeply over rocky and mossy terrain to the falls. The cache is placed off to the left of the trail at an area with a decent viewpoint of the upper portion of the falls. You are NOT required to put your life in danger in order to find the cache, but it is still very close to the cliffs and you must use caution in the entire area regardless.

I have included some spoiler pics of the cache location at the bottom of the page which I strongly encourage everyone to use as your safety is much more important than the "challenge of the hunt"!

Not far down the trail past the cache site is the killer gully. As soon as you lay eyes on it, you'll see why the poor souls who lost their lives made the deadly decision to walk to the edge. It looks almost as though it were put there for that exact purpose, while the roar of the falls lures you closer like a siren song. The smooth rock at the end is also great at creating the illusion of not being slippery when in reality it is very much so. Please DO NOT go near the edge. No waterfall is worth killing yourself over. Also even if we were to pretend for a second that there is one... or even two such waterfalls in this area, neither of them would be this one!

The campsite where you will want to spend the night if you intend to go after the rest of the caches in the area including the ones at those waterfalls is just above the embankment on the opposite side of the gully. Ignore the rope straight ahead and go just a few meters to the right to a much easier path. I have to say this is probably one of the nicest campsites anywhere in BC. The river setting between the lake and falls is like something straight out of a movie scene. A calm, clear river that looks perfect for floating down in a canoe or inner tube until without warning, tumbling down a high cliff into a rugged steep-walled gorge. There is enough room for maybe two tents at the campsite so if you are here on a weekend be sure to come early in the day as it is a very popular spot.

Best of luck!
