One of many entrances into Pukekura Park. At times a high muggles area. Bring your own pen/pencil.
The gates at Liardet Street entrance were funded by a bequest from Charles Sanders (1851 – 1933). Designed in impressive neo-classical art deco style by Victor Griffiths and Raymond Syme of architectural firm Griffith & Syme, New Plymouth. Originally the pylons and walls were to be faced in Mount Summers Stone (from Canterbury) but this proved to expensive so a tinted cement plaster was used, marked out and pointed to resemble stone. They were completed in 1938. These gates replaced the wrought iron ones presented by Robert Hughes in 1890. Part of these gates is now at the Victoria Street entrance. In the 1880’s Sanders established Ngaere Gardens between Stratford and Eltham. He moved to New Plymouth in 1912 where his garden, Dartmoor, in Westown became a horticulture show place. Westowns Dartmoor Av commemorates the estate. Just inside the Pukekura Park gates is Stan Lay Drive and a plaque commemorating his achievement and association with Pukekura Park.
Please replace where found and cover well.
