Erie Shores Wind Farm is a 99 megawatts (MW) wind farm developed by Erie Shores Wind Farm Limited Partnership. Over 5,260 hectares of farmland is optioned for wind power development in the townships of Bayham and Malahide in the Elgin County and the Old Houghton Township in the Norfolk County. The wind farm utilizes 66 GE wind turbines. Each turbine has a rated capacity of 1,500 kilowatts. The wind turbines are dispersed over 25 kilometres of shoreline and extend up to approximately two to three kilometres back from the shoreline.
The turbines themselves are huge. Each blade is 123 ft. long and weighs 7 tons. The mayeu or main body at the top of the structure contains the generator, main shaft, sensors and gears. It weighs 60 tons. The tower is 262 ft. tall, is built in 3 sections and weighs 133 tons. Total height is 380 ft. and total weight of each turbine is 214 tons or 428,000 lbs. All this is buried in 1.3 million lbs. of concrete and rebar and held in place by 149 (12 ft.) bolts.
