November Jade Ring TB Hotel Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

onecrazycanadian: Hi,

It has been at least 2 weeks since I last contacted you. In that time I have had no response from you and there has been no indication that the needed maintenance has been completed. Consequently I am archiving the cache at this time. If you correct the problem I indicated at some time in the near future I will take another look at it and may consider unarchiving the cache.

Thanks

Geocache Description:

Large container with lots of room for bugs and coins.
We called this a TB hotel just so people know it is large enough for TBs. Since we believe that geocaching is a great experience and memory maker for kids we put in some tradeables too. Being able to trade swag and find a treasure during a long road trip keeps everyone happy.
There is a Tim Horton's card for the FTF.
WARNING: WATCH FOR CACTUS AS YOU WALK FROM THE PARKING SPOT TO THE CACHE.

How many times have we driven through and said "We gotta put a cache here", "This would be a great spot for a TB hotel", "I gotta get out here and place a cache". Well we finally got a cache put out here.

In the winter, the kids (and parents) will 4 wheel it onto the top of the knoll to the west and toboggan down. Some days this campground has a few vehicles in it as people settle in the the night after a long day of driving.

RCAF Station Alsask was opened in 1963 as part of the Pinetree Line of NORAD radar stations. The station was later renamed CFD Alsask when the military branches were merged. The station was part of 44 Radar Squadron and had a call sign of November, Jade Ring.
The station consisted of three radar domes, housing, a school, swimming pool, with a staff complement of 125 (military) and 60 civilian workers.

The station was disbanded in 1987 and had been taken over by the village. The station property became part of the Rural Municipality of Milton when the village of Alsask was dissolved in 2009.

The one remaining radar dome, built in 1961, was designated a heritage property in 2002.

Some of the buildings are still being used. A flour mill has been set up in the buildings immediately south of this location. The swimming pool has been maintained by the community and is a busy spot from April to October. The main hall is now used as a pre-school.

It cannot be easy for a small place like Alsask to maintain this great big property, but they have and do it with excellence.

If you have time, stop for a tour of this town with tremendous community pride.

Congratulations to GypsySoul71 for the FTF.
