Geocache Description:

This is a cache that will require you to hike a great section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail through the Skunk and Foster Lakes State Natural Area. You will need to answer six easy questions from your observations at locations along the IAT to obtain the coordinates for the nearby Final. I have locations selected along the IAT that will take you in a large loop from the parking area to where the IAT comes out on North Foley Road a short walk north of the parking area.

This cache is not located at the given coordinates nor is it located on the SNA lands. The given coordinates will take you to the parking area for the SNA. Follow the IAT (not the gated access road) to the south from the parking area. I have the following 6 locations and questions in an order to guide you along the trail, but you may do them in any order. Several trails and old tracks intersect with the IAT. You could take some of the other routes off the IAT and find these locations - in fact I would encourage you to do so as there are many more interesting spots here that are not along the IAT.

The Final physical cache is located a short way down the road at: N 44° 25.ABC, W 089° 12.DEF.

D = At the location N 44° 25.567, W 089° 12.827, add the number of yellow arrow signs plus the number of rectangular yellow trail markers on the trail post. (Trail Note: taking the unmarked trail east behind the trail post will bring you to a nice overlook of Grenlie Lake to the north and a boggy area to the south - this foot trail will also lead you back to the parking area)

A = At the location N 44° 25.638, W 089° 12.915, the number of rectangular yellow trail markers painted on the side of the White Pine tree.

F = At the location N 44° 25.692, W 089° 13.087, the largest tree next to the IAT is what type: Pine = 0, Oak = 6, or Birch = 4.

C = At the location N 44° 25.773, W 089° 13.085, the large natural object SW of the trail is what: a large White Pine tree = 0, a large boulder = 4, or a large stump = 8

E = (from the C location follow the IAT to the northwest, cross the small stream coming from Skunk Lake. The IAT forks here and makes the Mesic Forest Loop) At the location N 44° 25.957, W 089° 13.282, are you standing between: two large White Pine trees = 0, two large boulders = 4, or two large stumps = 8.

B = (after the Mesic Forest Loop, follow the IAT to the NE to the B location)(Trail Note: the more obvious track going to the east is the access road which goes back to the gate at the parking area - it also goes south following the east side of Skunk Lake where you can get a good view of the lake - the tamaracks on the boggy west side of the lake are beautiful in the fall) At this location N 44° 25.915, W 089° 12.910, to the north of the trail is a man made marker. Does it say: 'NO TRESPASSING' = 0, 'NO HUNTING' = 3, or 'BOUNDARY' = 6.

From the B location it is about a half mile hike east to North Foley Road and then right/south about 250 yards to the parking area. The attached related web page will give you more detailed info about the SNA as well as a topo map of the area. The photo of the topo map was taken at the kiosk located at the parking area - it shows the route of the IAT through the SNA, including the Mesic Forest Loop.
