Back in my younger days, when I was going to Wadena Vocational Technical School learning how to be an electrician, I lived near this location, and this tar driveway is where the road used to be. The school tried an experiment and decided to provide bus rides from neighbouring cities to their school.

So, to try to make a bit of extra money, I became a bus driver. I wasn't very good at it, (a couple of times, I got it stuck right at the end of my driveway) but I gave it my best shot. My job was to keep the bus at my house, drive it into Park Rapids, make stops in Menahga and Sebeka, then head to Wadena.

One night, we got freezing rain and the roads ended up with about a half inch of glare ice on them. I managed to get the bus out of my driveway this time, but it took about twice as long to get into Park Rapids as it usually does, and I figured by the time I got to Wadena, school would probably be over. Leaving Park Rapids, I made the executive decision that the bus wasn't running that day.

I turned back down this road to head home, thinking that I would use my car to drive my passengers back to Park Rapids instead of the bus. Coming down the hill, the back end of the bus started fishtailing and there was not much I could do about it except let off of the gas.

I am sure you are thinking, "Wow, that would be bad going off the road and into the river with passengers on the bus," but, it gets worse. I see a semi tractor and trailer coming from the other direction! I think you could hear a pin drop in the back of the bus.

I don't know how it happened, but the bus righted itself, missed the semi, and didn't go into the ditch at all. But, if I remember right, I couldn't make it up the hill on the other side of the river. So there we sat. I walked home, got my car, and drove everyone home. The bus sat there until the roads thawed enough to get it to move again.

There is more to the story of that day, but I have bored you enough. Go find the cache.
