Welcome to Wolf Rock Cave cache.
Wolf Rock is located in the Vernon Unit of the Calcasieu Ranger District of the Kisatchie National Forest. Archaeological evidence shows that primitive peoples used the cave as a habitation from time to time over the years. A pretty creek running along the cliff bottom offered fresh water.
After the Louisiana Purchase, the United States and Spain disagreed on precisely where the boundary between Spanish Texas and Louisiana actually was. To prevent problems, military leaders on both sides agreed that the disputed land would be a "Neutral Territory" and neither side would allow settlers or military expeditions into the area.
Outlaws soon moved into the ungoverned land. One of these outlaws, John Murrel, terrorized travelers throughout the strip. He used several caves in the area as hideouts and Wolf Cave is believed to have been one of those. The other caves have been destroyed by the Forestry Service.
I have been in this area since December 2012 and I never knew this rock formation/ cave existed
This is my first cache placed so I hope it goes well. The cache is a home made PVC cache POD, well camo'd. There is a log and pen inside and assorted trinkets. There is also $10 for the first to find.
Once you get to the parking area, the most direct route to the rock formation is the trail on the right, but all trails lead to the rocks. Just head up hill. The cave isn't far but BE AWARE -- you will be coming up on top of the cave. There is nothing to mark the cliff edge and legend says that over the years people have occasionally walked right off the side. Please USE EXTREME CAUTION as you are far from help in this area and cell phone reception is spotty. The trails down the cliff side are pretty steep and we recommend you wear sturdy shoes. Congrats to SGTsurvey for the FTF!
