Geocache Description:

Kip ponosno krasi majhen trg in simbolizira sodelovanje in povezanost vseh ljudi v kraju in šempeterski župniji.

Kip stoji nasproti cerkve sv.

The town of Šempeter v savinjski dolini was named Sveti Peter (Saint Peter) up until 1941. Saint Peter is the town patron saint. On the place of the statue a chapel once stood, but it was demolished due to widening of the nearby road. As a substitute for it, a replica of St. Peter’s statue in Vatican was unveiled in 2003 during the Šempeter town festival. The statue it's town central monument and symbolizes the cohabitation of all the people in the town.

The statue stands nearby the church of Saint Peter. Church has a rich history as it was first mentioned in a written document in 1256. The interiors of the church are covered by many frescoes, but the most remarkable monument in the church is the exceptional statue of Madonna and Child dating in 1320. It shows Mother Mary with Child Jesus holding a dove. The statue is one of the most famous and beautiful Gothic statues in Slovenia. Few years ago, it was exhibited in the Louvre museum in Paris, France. The Church can be visited during the opening hours of the nearby Roman Necropolis. Guided tours are also available.
