My grandfather was born in Sheffield in 1904. He came to the United States while still a boy in 1914. My uncles still had the English accent all their lives, but Pa had very little. he told us stories of his brothers working the coal mines and coming home at night black as tar. The family struggled as many did then, but they all decided that little Tom was not going into those mines, and somehow managed to move to the other side of the Altantic to a little town in Western Massachusetts called Shelburne Falls. He told us that when he saw his new home that he asked his Mum if they were going to live in the park. I guess he had only seen trees in a park and now he was going to be surrounded by them every day. He grew up and married Nani, and Dad was born in a house on North st. When Dad was young they moved to Northampton where Pa worked making knives with Sheffield steel. After Nani died in 1962 Pa moved back to Shelburne Falls where he continued making knives and spent the rest of his life there. Someday I will visit Sheffield, but in the meantime , snoopyisboss has offered to place and maintain a cache for me.
