Our neck of the woods has seen its fair share of forest fires. In 1970, long before there were roads leading out of the area, a fire started close to the ski hill and the mines had to send some heavy equipment to cut a firewall through the forest. In 1992, another fire caused the evacuation of the trailer court for a few hours. A major fire started on June 27, 1976 that burned close to both towns for several days. In 2013, yet another major forest fire started in the Moosehead Lake area on June 23, 2013 and burned both countless acres of land and many cottages. In 2014, at least three forest fires were rapidly controlled by quick responses from firefighters and water bomber aircraft.
